Service Excellence for your BMW Motorcycle

We get emails...

I really congratulate you on opening your shop.  Just from the year an a half that I had my bike on the Peninsula, it was clear to me that a knowledgeable, passionate, dealer alternative was required, and the BMW rider community in the area is certainly big enough to support it.  I won’t say who, but I counted 6 mistakes on a simple tire change at one of the Bay Area dealerships, and that just isn’t acceptable.   When you pay $100+ per hour for service, you should not have to redo/recheck the work out of concern for safety.

Cheers and thanks for the info,

—Randy, 2004 K1200RS

Hi Ted,

Just wanted to send you a thank you for the GS-911.

This Sunday I hooked up the GS-911 to find my one ABS fault for Low Brake fluid.  After re-bleeding the ABS system and cleaning up I erased the ABS fault and took her out for spin. Hurray No ABS flashing any longer.......An no Fault codes.

Thanks for your Tech support.

I got home from Gillette on Tuesday with a bike in need of new fluids and some TLC.  I rummaged through my on-hand parts and determined that I needed an oil filter, air filter, some new fuel line and a bunch of crush washers.  I'd never used the Beemer Shop's new on-line ordering system so I thought I'd give it a try, (as my nearest BMW dealer is an hour drive). Late Wednesday afternoon, I placed the order, within an hour I received an email telling me that my order was being processed.  I opened my email the next morning and I had another email telling me that my order had shipped.

I figured that with no special shipping request, I would see my parts some time next week.  To my great surprise, I had the parts in hand by Saturday.  WOW, an Internet order from California to Wisconsin in 4 days without overnight shipping!!!  The last California Internet order I placed was for my Corbin seat and It took 3 1/2 months!  Ted you've got a great operation thanks for the super service.

Gentlemen,

I just wanted to write a quick note of thanks for taking good care of both myself and my R1100S today. You definitely went the extra mile to get that rear hub bearing installed while I waited. The bike ran like a top, I was able to wind it out a little bit on the way back down to Monterey and it felt like a new bike.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

—Jason L., 2001 R1100S

To whom it may concern,

could you please tell me the quantity and type of oil that goes into the transmission and final drive of a 2008 BMW R1200GS?

Is it thru that on this bike the transmission oil weight is different then the final drive? I have also heared that this bike doesn't have a fuel filter anymore? How is the fuel kept clean before entering the fuel injection system?

Thanks so much for your time

—Franz K.

 ----- Original Message -----
HI Franz,

The final drive and gearbox call for 90wt hypoid gear oil, most people run an 80w90 or 75w90. The fill amount for the final drive is 220cc.

There is no fuel filter for your model.

Best regards,
Ted Porter

Ted,

thank you so much for the information. I live in the foothills near Yosemite and sure would like to stop by at your place when I am taking a trip to the coast. The local dealer here isn't too hot on giving technical info and charging unbelievable prices for any service! The BMW booklet doesn't even give basic technical info about the bike anymore.

Thanks again for your time

—Franz K., R1200GS

Ted,

Thank you for the prompt and efficient service regarding my recent order which I received in 6days to Western Australia.

I look forward to doing business with The Beemer Shop in the future.

Good Morning Ted,

I wanted to take this opportunity to once again thank you for the great experience I had last Saturday while my Adventure was being serviced by Adam.  I enjoy the fact that you have been able to maintain  that "motorcycling family" feel while still conducting a business.  I realize this is a difficult balance to maintain, but it was wonderful that this customer was able to keep his "baby" within sight at all times and relate any pertinent information to the technician whenever he required it.  The result of  Adam's "touch" on my bike was crisper throttle response, improved acceleration and a smile on my face.

Kudos to both you and Adam for all your skilled expertise and excellent customer relations.  Keep up the great service and I will do all I can to  spread the word about your  facility.

Happy Trails,

—Steve Bolliger, R1150GS

I just wanted to respond with an update concerning the products I ordered from you.

I can not believe the difference they (Wilbers shock and fork springs) made in my bike.  The excessive movement I had from the fork from moderate acceleration and braking are gone, the bike feels far more stable, and the ride is not harsh (which is what I initially feared when installing the new fork springs).  The only negative with riding that I have found is that my gas mileage has dropped from 42mpg to about 35mpg.  However, I think that statement is the greatest testament to how much the suspension has improved...because I can push the bike that much harder with confidence.

The only real issue that I came across is that Marzocchi changed the design of the forks slightly on the 2007 S2R800; they deleted the spring retaining clip so that the spring now rests against the fork cap and (not feeling that is a big enough change) they shortened the length of the fork.  So, I needed to add a spacer.  No big deal, just an unexpected snag.  The rear shock was real easy to install.

I also wanted to thank you for your prompt and helpful services.  As far as I am concerned, you bent over backwards to help me out, and I really appreciate it.

Thanks,

—Ed K., Ducati Monster S2R 800

It (Wilbers shock order) was delivered in perfect shape. I appreciate all that the BeemerShop has done. I will be installing it this weekend and testing it directly after. I am so glad that I was given your shops name over at Adventure Rider Forums. They were right, Ted is a big help.

Thanks again.

Subject: New shocks for my R1150RT
Date: Wed, April 02, 2008 9:38 am

Hello:

It's time to bite the bullet. At 62K I'm on my second set of OEM shocks (last set a take-off). Well, I'm not really ON them, I'm wobbling OVER them.

I hear you guys can advise, order, and install Wilbers or Ohlins. How do we start the process?

I live up in Sonoma, so ideally when the time comes to install I'd like to set a morning appointment, hang around, and take the bike away that day, availing myself of your wireless internet.

So can you give me a timeframe and tell me what you need to know from me? I know the "interview process" is important in selecting shocks. Here's a start.

2002 R1150RT
My weight: 185lbs, dry.
Height: 5'9"
Seat normally in mid-position.
Passenger: 165lbs, but only 5% of the time
Luggage: I DO tour alot, and carry a 3-bag setup.

BUT

I am a fairly aggressive sport tourer normally, and prefer the twisties. Think Trinity Grade from Glen Ellen to Yountville, if you know it, or Fairfax-Bolinas Road, or Mines Rd. Usually solo with no luggage. More confidence and control in these situations is my primary concern.

Enough about me.

Thanks,

—Sam T.

HI Sam,

Sorry for the delay in my response, I got behind on e-mails from being on vacation.

I left you a voice mail message. It would be best to talk with you over the phone because there is so much information to give you regarding the differences between Ohlins and Wilbers, and also all the different Wilbers options.

Please give us a call when you have a chance, I would be happy to answer all your suspension questions.

Best regards,

Great experience with your shop yesterday and what a wonderful ride home on my new Wilbers (shocks).  Noticed their positive effect immeidately as I descended route 17 at high warp speed.

You have a marvelous operation there; a dream-come-true really for a guy who has been looking for such a place forever.  Only complaint:  more chairs for the guys who like to sit around and talk motorcycling!

Really, I've been looking for an enthusiast's enthusiast-tech for 20 years, and I have found him in you.

I'll be back for my next 12K and (hopefully not too many) other things.

Hello BeemerShop

Just to tell you, that the GS-911 has arrieved in 'little sunny Denmark' and is working 'A-OK'

We have a general meeting in the BMW Club DK in 1 week from now and I'm going to 'let a word or 2 drop' to them about you and the GS-911...

Let's see what that can bring up reg. business :o)....

By-the-way: I've saved approx 155,- $ bying the GS-911 at your place (and that's after Danish taxes, etc. and you did earn your share too - sqare'n fare :o) you have to 'get butter on the bread too', like we say *smilling*... ), so ....

Thanks for a very good service and expedit delivery....

Have a nice day og take care..

I've been getting my supplies from Ted Porter and I doubt if good ol Ted would even sell me the non-hinged types since he actually pays attention to what you order for each particular bike and questions you when he thinks you're ordering the wrong thing. That's the reason he gets most of my parts and supplies business. He's like "spell check"............catches your mistakes. (Thanks Ted)

Hi BeemerShop (Mr. Ted Porter),

I'm shopping for Wilbers Suspension for my '99 R1100S and saw your add in the latest BMW Owners News.  Unless I'm mistaken you are the same Ted Porter I spoke to ~10 years ago when I had Bob's do a Dual Plug conversion on the Heads of my '94 R100GS/PD and provide 9.5:1 Pistons, among other things, for my rebuild...Thanks for the break-in tips!...that motor ran just great!

Here is my Request Data for the Wilbers Shocks:
- Article-No. Wilbers Models 630 Front and 643 Rear.
- Your weight - 230 Lbs with all riding gear on.
- Your pillions weight - 154 Lbs with all riding gear on.

Hi Dan

I left you a voice mail message regarding the Ohlins shocks detail also.

I can't print Ohlins discounted prices so I left that info on the message. The Ohlins front is nice on an R1100S because the rebound damping knob is in the same location as stock. This is not true with Wilbers. The rear Ohlins has a remote hydraulic preload adjuster, rebound damping, and one compression damping adjustment.

The Wilbers are:
Front $549.00 rebound damping adjust, threaded preload adjust.
Rear: $1138.00 with piggyback reservoir and remote preload adjuster, high and low speed compression adjust and rebound adjust.

I prefer the Wilbers on most models, but I like the location of the rebound damping knob on the front Ohlins. You have to decide if that's important to you.

I hope to speak with you soon.

Best,
Ted Porter

Hi Ted,

Thanks for your reply and the Ohlins Pricing message...Josh tells me you are very busy with paper work today...no problem, I understand.

I too find the Ohlins Front Rebound Dial on top an attractive feature but truthfully I'd probably turn it once or thrice a year at most therefore it's not so important to me.  I've had Ohlins Rear Suspension on two of my previous motorcycles and enjoyed them both very much.  However, this time I want to give the Wilbers Units a try.

Josh tells me you'll call me again tomorrow (Friday)...Thanks and looking forward to talking to you.

Take care,

—Dan M.

Hi Ted,

The Wilbers Suspension Units I got from you are just great!

I went for an aggressive ride on some curves and hills where the pavement quality is sometimes much less than ideal.the Wilbers make a mockery of the bumps, uneven pavement, frost heaves, cracks, tar patches, etc.  What a difference in drama level or more specifically the lack thereof when leaned over in a bumpy curve.  I can only assume that the smoother ride will hold me in good stead on long days in the saddle too.

Thanks for all your help,

—Dan M., '99 BMW R1100S, Washington, IL

I just want to thank Ted Porter of the Beemer Shop for personally helping me avert a trip-ending problem with an oil leak on my GS. Although a minor oil filler gasket leak, the bike was pumping out oil and it would have ruined my trip. It was pretty amazing actually. I detoured about 50 miles out of my way past several factory dealers knowing that Ted would help and he took the time from his busy day to get me on my way. It took Ted about 5 minutes to repair the problem and send me on my way. He even pressure cleaned the cylinder head for me. I am not sure that I would get the same service from the dealer.

—Clay H., 2000 1150 GS

Hello Ted,

I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time yesterday and completing the job before the days end. The bike ran flawlessly on the ride home and there were no oil leaks.  I'll make an effort to put 500 miles on the bike in the next couple of weeks.

Regards,

—David H.

Bike works great.  No more lifter noises since new cam chain mechanism installed.  Service was great, Josh was big help.  I will be returning for my next service.

—Paul G. R1150GS

Ted,

As always, I am again impressed with your workmanship.  I managed to get my transmission re-installed this weekend and take the bike for a little ride.  It's never shifted so well!  This bike always had a sort of "whine" ever since I purchased it, and I had pretty much accepted it as "normal" based on others opinions, and my own lack of experience (it was my first Airhead).  Now I find out how wrong I was, as the box is quiet as can be.  Things are tight, and I'm not hitting any false neutrals, even in spirited riding.

Thanks again for all your help; for taking the time to discuss the condition of the box, for discussing my 5th gear options, for taking all my calls and answering my questions patiently (including the ones about my GSPD caliper), and for doing such excellent work.  Thanks to Josh as well, for taking my calls, filling my orders, and getting things shipped out for me.

Best Regards,

—Josh M., Toledo, OH

Ted,

Heads have been received and the left head has undergone a visual incoming inspection.  Preliminary indications show excellent craftsmanship.  And a double A plus good on all new packaging.

Looks like a winner to me!

You are on the top of my short list of approved vendors for additional BMW component repair!

—Howard E.

Ted,

Just finished my service with you guys an hour ago. Could not be happier! This bike has never run so smooth...no more backfiring or rough idles. I have a happy bike!

Adam and Andy were great. They were helpful and extremely knowledgeable.

I could not be happier with the service and will not hesitate to recommend it to any other beemer rider i meet. Thanks so much!

—Sam, R1200GS

Hi Ted,

Just wanted to say I'm enjoying the Interstate battery that I ordered online from your shop.  You had the best price.  I'll never go back to acid.  Thanks again for this fine product & service.

Ted,

Just wanted to say thanks for the work you guys did on my 1150R on Saturday.  The level of service you provided not only to me but other customers I observed while I waited was refreshing to see and experience.  It is nice to know that there are still a few places that still do business the old fashion way.  With Respect!

My 1150R runs better than ever and the time you took to help me adjust the new Ohlins shocks was really appreciated.  I went on a 200 mile ride on Sunday and the bike handled much better and the ride quality was good too.

Thanks again to you and your staff for all your help..

—Garry C., San Jose, CA

Ordered some unobtainium from Josh at Ted's Beemer Shop in Californication on Friday and they were in my mail box Monday morning.  Now THATS SERVICE!!!  Thanks Ted and Josh!  You guys rock!

Y'all drive friendly!

Hi Ted,

Great advice and service regarding the coils for my 1150 R. The bike runs as good as new and much better than it did prior to shutting down completely. I was wondering if there is some way of spotting this kind of problem before the bike fails as I had noticed hard starting, poor gas mileage and hesitation when accelerating for a while and am thinking that this was all coil related as the bike runs much better now. To make matters worse the bike had been in for it's 42K service at XXXX BMW and been pronounced good just before breaking down.

Thanks again for all the help.................

—Peter, 2004 R1150R

Hi Ted,

Yesterday I took my new GS1200 Adventure in for its 12K service with you, this being the first one at your shop with the new 1200, although you used to service my old GS11150 Adventure until I sold it last May.

Both Josh and Adam really looked after me. The new bike has been fairly 'noisy' since I picked it up brand new from the dealer, so imagine my shock when Adam informed me of the huge gaps in the valves and also the fact that the rockers had clearly not been adjusted since new (you could literally see the vertical play on them). The result was I got to ride home a much quieter and sweeter running GS, so I am a very happy customer. I cant tell you how impressed I am with your shop, not just the great quality of the work your team carries out, but also the fact that I can talk with the technician and discuss specific issues and or areas of concern face to face.

Once again again thanks for an outstanding service. I have copied my Bay Area based buddy who also rides a GS1200 Adventure. He will be contacting you shortly to schedule his 6K service.

—Bob

Ted/Josh,

Just a quick note to let you know I received my transmission and rear drive in the mail yesterday.  Thanks so much for getting this done in time so I can make my ride.  Fyi - I've done this Memorial Day ride for 17 years straight on my GS, and didn't want to break my streak.  ...and the guys have been giving me the business about it, too.  Now I'll show them.

Can wait to hear how smooth (and quiet) my bike rides now!

—Denny B.

I received my parts by US Priority mail TWO days after ordering! Thanks Ted, very impressive.

—Clay H., R1150GS

Hi Ted...

Just wanted to tell you how happy I am with the work and the service people in your shop.

Both Josh and [Adam], the fellow that did the work last time, are very informative and just a pleasure to trust ones bike to.

—Bob S., San Jose, CA

Hi Ted, thanks for the great service.  My transmission arrived safely today. It may be a while before I get the bike running but I am going to start re installing it tonight.  This is a big project for me.  It has been a real pleasure doing business with you.  I only wish it could have been in person.  Hopefully I can stop in some time and meet you and your staff.  We are both on the West coast.

—Doug, '89 R100RT

Hi Ted,
Just a quick note to Thank You for guiding me through the setup and ordering process for the Wilburs, I received as promised this past Friday and installed Saturday. A short ride confirmed my expectations that these would transform the LT. I appreciate the time spent on the phone with me, and will highly recommend your shop. I frequent the BMWLT.com site, they are always looking for group buys on products. Don't know if this is doable, but may be a resource for more business.

Thanks again, I look forward to dealing with you in the future. Maybe if I'm lucky, some day I'll get tired of Crownsville and move out to your "neck of the woods"!

Sincerely,

—Alan F., Crownsville, Maryland

Hi Ted. I received the Wilbers you sent for my 2004 Ducati Monster 800 and am very happy.  The quality of the shock is evident in the finishing--too bad it is mostly hidden on the bike.

I am very impressed with the performance out of the box. It's funny that the spec sheet they include says not to adjust anything because the shock is set up at the factory.  Having lived in Germany for 5 years I chuckled at that but knew they were probably righteously righteous. Needless to say it feels just right.

Funny thing about better suspension, I can't put my finger on what feels better but it just seems like a different bike--able to leap tall buildings...etc.

Thanks for all your help,

—Jim J ., Roswell, GA

Excerpt from Adventure Riders Forum

Guys, I recently called XXX XXX to book my GS Adventure in for a 12K service. First shock was they were booked solid for 5 weeks - second shock was the price - $560 + tax.

WTF.

Dick on this site recommended Ted Porter to me who has recently started the independant 'Beemershop' in Scotts Valley, CA, just outside of Santa Cruz. Ted used to be service manager at both San Jose BMW and also at Watsonville prior to setting up on his own recently. He has been a 'wrench' for over 25 years and clearly has a passion for the BMW brand.

I decided to have all the ABS system drained and refreshed at the same time as I have a big roadtrip planned shortly, and also opted for a change to synthetic oil. I picked my GS up today.

The GS is honestly running better than it ever has! I cant say how impressed I am with the service - its outstanding. Ted took the time to run over everything he did on the service (inc throttle sync etc), and also provided a 2 page service data sheet which shows all the values of the brake pads, valve and torque settings on everything from the drain plug to the locknut on the valve adjusting screw.

Not only did Ted carry out an excellent job but I also saved over $200 over the BMW dealer.

I can highly recommend this guy - and before you ask I am not linked with Ted or the Beemershop in any way. I just want to share my positive experience with the rest of YFF's.

Hi Ted. Been meaning to send you a note to let you know how much I like this shock! (Wilbers Model 640) Although I can only compare it to my 14 yr old memory of the stock Bilstien when the bike was new, and too many miles on same worn out, this is like having a new motorcycle(probably BETTER!). I've put about 1200 miles on it, last weekend a few hundred on forest service roads over in the Coast Range.

Dialing in a shock is somewhat of a learning curve for me but I have loosened the compression about 1 1/2 turns and have left the rebound as supplied, works oh so sweet! Anyway, I wanted to thank you again for the service, and hopefully will meet you in person some time.

—Dennis N., Yuba City/Strawberry Valley, Ca. BMW R100GS

Service at Ted’s

We had an issue that required a mechanic! Venita and I have been doing all our own servicing on the R bikes for years now and it is usually fun and rewarding. But when the lights on the bike all went out at once on a road trip, I figured we were in over our heads. I lost the headlights, horn, turn signals and brake and tail lights all at once. The road check did not reveal any burned out fuses and I thought it was probably a defective relay. The only relay that could do that was the “load relief” relay, the one that shuts off all the lights when you push the “start” button. Knowing zip about relays I took it to the dealer.

It took them two weeks to get to it, but they were busy. That resulted in five hours of labor with a courtesy discount to 2.5 and about a $400 bill with battery replacement. I was told the load relief relay was fine. Nothing was fixed though. The net result was that they wanted to sell me a $2,400 wiring harness because of a “short” in the wiring harness.

I took it up to Ted, who graciously accepted the bike immediately and said he would squeeze it in. His shop, if you have not been there is located in an industrial area of Scotts Valley over on Janis way. He and his two mechanics are delightful to talk to, knowledgeable and seem to have a real passion to work on our beloved Beemers. There are three lifts, lots of parts stocked and it is easy to get to. It’s the kind of shop I would build at home if I had about an 8 car garage.

Ted called when they started to take the bike apart to check the wiring harness. He called again about 30 minutes later. The load relief relay was bad! He indicated that there are two relays in the box with the same number; one goes to the headlights, etc, and the other to the fog lights. He just swapped them. The headlights, tail and stop lights and horn started working and the fog lights quit. Problem solved. It took him, literally, five minutes to diagnose the problem, and the part was $10. Then he called personally a few days later to see if it was all working properly! When was the last time that happened with service performed on a bike!

Ted had a batch of bikes at the shop when we went up. The ranged from a CHP bike to many of the various K and R bikes and lots of Airheads. He was happy to discuss just about anything BMW and it really felt like home. And, no, neither Venita nor I have stock in Ted’s place. But it would be a great buy if he ever went public. Thanks Ted.

From the Monterey Bay BMW Riders club newsletter, Feb. 2007

I'm writing to say that I took advantage of the Winter down time to pull my transmission and ship it down to Ted Porter at the Beemer Shop to get the circlip installed on the output shaft. I was not experiencing any problems but after reading about the possible catastrophic failure that can occur I decided to get the work done before I got stranded far from home. Ted is always willing to talk on the phone and he called me after opening the case to say that there wasn't any damage other than the normal wear. I decided to have the bearings replaced while he was in there any way. Also got a new neutral switch (the old one was leaking pretty badly), new seals, an upgraded shift fork and some other needed improvements. Thanks for the great service Ted!!!

Ted Porter's Beemer Shop in Scotts Valley, CA absolutely ROCKS! I get parts from him quicker than from anyone close to local. Plus, he knows Airheads, which is more than can be said for most BMW dealers.

Hey Ted,

Just got home from your shop. SWEET ride. My lil' filly runs insanely well and much smoother and quieter thanks to Adams' expertise. I was really impressed with your shop, your attention to detail and overall passion for what you do. Plus you are cool guys and incredibly knowledgeable. Thanks for everything, and please let Josh and Adam know it is much appreciated. See you in 6k or sooner for some shocks.

Extracted from the BMW Airhead Boxer mailing list:

Subject: RE: Parts is Parts

I too have ordered from Ted Porter...several times....everything from NUMEROUS itsy bits to fork springs. Sometimes with parts for two different Airheads in the same order. Never waited for anything more than two days. And he's had every little thing in stock with one exception and still only waited two more days for that. And Ted makes absolutely sure what you are ordering is really what you need ...especially when you are mixing up bits in one order for two different bikes. The fact that he catches that and will double check with you to make sure all things are correct made me love him. He even asked what project I was doing and suggested a couple more things that I should get to do the job. Those couple things added a total of about $5.00 to the order maybe, and I was ever grateful that he had done that so I didn't get in the middle of a job and have to stop to order something else.

Try Ted for your parts if you want them in any reasonable time frame and want them right.

He even beats out my local dealer who takes nearly two weeks for anything. I know it's good to support your local dealer, but not when you are consistently put off. I say support the honest, knowledgable, interested, concerned with getting it right, AIRHEAD guy !!

— Connie R., Alabaster, AL

Ted and Josh,

I just wanted to say thank you for all the work you did on my bike and the time spent with me explaining things. The bike runs like it's brand new. Thank you so much. I will be back again.

Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for the great work on my 81R100CS! I went to start her up on Sunday, One push of the start button and she fired up instantly! No off-idle stumble at all! I couldn't be happier with the way this bike now runs! You can count me as one of the "beemershop" faithful! Thanks again !

— Ken R., Livermore, CA

Ted, Josh, and crew,

This note is past due but still heartfelt. I appreciate the care and technical expertise you gave in getting my '02 K12RS back on the road. I couldn't imagine the bike performing much better. You guys really extracted a piece of gold from the piece of salvage I dropped off to you a couple of months ago. From the moment I pulled into your parking lot all the way until I finally received my plates today from the DMV, you guys offered the height of professionalism. You never hesitated to go the extra mile. Believe me - I noticed it - and I really appreciate it.

Rubber side down,

— Carl W.

Hi Ted,

Made it home. No leaks anywhere.

I can't tell you how grateful I was that you were able to get me on the road on Saturday. It was a pleasure to watch a skilled craftsman. A day in your shop was like a day in the garage with old friends. You run a first class business and I wish you continued success.

— Allan A., Delta, British Columbia, Canada

Hi Ted, Adam, Josh,

I want to say thank you for taking such good care of me last week when I had my Scorpion in for the final drive output shaft bearing replacement.

I was able to enter the cyclecar in the Pacific Grove Concours and came away with a blue ribbon for Judge’s Choice. Much to the chagrin of the Ferrari, lamborgini, porch, cobra, & viper owners I am sure.

I plan on making a trip to the SJ airport this Saturday and would like to stop by and pick up some Transmission gear oils to change the trans and final drive flushout.

See you then.

Looking at your website I would like to arrange to have the brake fluids changed as well, some other time.

— Glenn M., Carmel, CA

Hi Ted,

Thank you, and please thank the guys, for a good job restoring my R100S to service. The new Michelin Macadam tires feel great. I'll look forward to more riding now that this bike is in good shape. I'll call before long to schedule a service in the fall after I've put about 3,000 miles on the bike.

— Mark W.

Ted,

I thank you for improving the driveability of my recently purchased 1995 R1100GS.  I did not realize how much deferred maintence my GS had and how poorly it was really running.

You had diagnosed and successfully reset an ABS brake error.  Also, with your recommmendation...the Throttle Body Injectors were synchronized, Throttle Position Sensor adjusted, and Throttle Cable slack tightened.

I was instantly amazed how well my bike performed while returning home on Hwy 17.  The GS was quieter and smoother, with faster throttle response and acceleration, with minimal surging!!!

Your shop deserves the excellent reputation I have read about and heard...from other BMW riders.

— Rick F.

Ted

Just want to tell you guys, great job on the bike. Didn’t realize how well the bike ran until I hit 225 miles on the OD with out the gas light coming on. It used to come on around 175 to 185. Tell Adam great job. See you at 42 K.

Thanks again.

— Willie

Ted—
Let me see if I understand this.

  1. I place an order with you (California) for about $30 in parts to be sent to me (Vermont).
  2. You make not one, but two follow up phone calls to me and my friends to ensure that the right throttle springs are sent.
  3. Two weeks later, you follow up with an email to make sure everything was ok.

My response:   Yes, we’re delighted.

My future business is headed your way.    Thank you very, very much.

— Bill, Rutland, VT

Ted, Excellent service--I received the parts the next day. Thanks and you have my future business.

— Bernard S., Lafayette, CA

My god, it's like a whole new bike.  What a difference!  I am definitely going into my trip feeling confident in my bike.

Thanks guys!

—Michelle, '92 R100GS, Santa Cruz, CA

I just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for doing such a great job on my F650. It has never run as good as it does now. Don't know what exactly you did to it, but I tell you, when I hit the throttle it goes. Also, I think the 10 weight fork oil is definitely the way to go.

Anyway, thanks again. My bike and I are quite happy with the results.

— Mike, Alameda, CA

Ted, the shocks have worked out very well. I installed them last Tuesday and the bike felt a bit smoother when hitting rough pavement. But when I rode 700 miles last weekend I noticed that I was regularly exceeding the speed limit on everything from two lane country roads to the interstate. Best way I can describe it is that its the difference between doing 90 in a Volkswagen and the same speed in a Cadillac. I
didn't expect the shocks to make such a big difference.

Thanks for the great service.

— Joel, North Carolina

Just wanted to thank you and let you know that though my ride home yesterday was short and wet, I could feel a distinct improvement in shift quality.  Where before most gear changes were a multi part hunt and seek adventure, the gear box now feels precise in its ability to shift through the gears.  I did not have the chance to give the clutch a good test but I suspect I will notice a similar improvement when (if) the weather clears.

Thanks again!

— Sean  M., Santa Cruz, CA

...I removed the gearbox on the ST to fix the threads on the vent/speedo/ground bolt and lube splines when I found the thrust rod seal all buggered. Took it to Ted Porter at the Beemershop in Scotts Valley to fix as I was not comfortable attempting to do it myself. While there, Ted noticed that the output bearing felt a bit rough. Opened it up and there was some play in the bearings. Only 29K on the box as far as I know, but I had Ted go through the entire box.

Ted advised that everything else looked pristine, so he just replaced the output bearings. Got the box back yesterday. I just wanted to report a great experience with the Beemershop. Ted's technical prowess is known, but he is also willing to take time to explain things and truly consult with his customers. Saved me some clams by just replacing the output bearings. And his prices are reasonable given his experience. It's definately worth the trip from San Francisco.

— Chris R., San Francisco, CA

Thanks again for taking the time trying to find a better balance for the rear wheel on my GS. Most shops would have just gone with the first computer reading and stopped, you went the extra mile and that is one of the many reasons I choose to bring my bikes to you.

— R. L., San Jose, CA

Just wanted to say thanks for the work you did on my new-to-me R80. All Ihad the bike in for was a helicoil and a new final drive, but thanks to your "while I was in there I just..." I have some invaluable knowledge about mybike and some carb tweaks that have it running better than ever.

Thanks for caring. I'll be back.

— Adam M., San Jose, CA

I called the shop today and left a message to say thanks. I really appreciated the credit you processed for the discount you discovered. I got your messages on my way back to town after the long weekend and it was a nice surprise.

Not that I ever thought otherwise, but it is really refreshing to be reminded how you do business and how you went the extra step to let me realize the savings after I'd already paid and received the bike. Besides your vast knowledge and the exemplary quality of work, you've reminded me of another reason why you'll continue to get my business.

Thanks again.

— Matt C., Oakland, CA

I wanted to thank you for the excellent service you performed on my K100 last week. I noticed the difference right away. It ran smoother and quieter. Obviously the valve adjustments were needed. I'm glad you noticed the front tire. The bike handles much better. Finally, I appreciate the small things that have always been your trademark. Both the center stand and the side stand were lubricated and they flip up on there own instead of my having to manually kick them up.

Again, thanks for a thorough job well done.

— A. D. J. III, Santa Cruz, CA

Ted, the bike is running better than ever, it is much smoother and quieter than before, it feels like a new bike. My son rode it a little the other night and could really see a difference in the steering. I should have done this sooner. Again thanks for working so well with me. I will be sure to recommend you to others.

— Don B., Carmel, CA

Ted, thanks for servicing by GS. It runs great! The new tires handled like...new tires. I had a good trip with no problems whatsoever. I'm a customer for life. It's good to have a friend in the m/c business. Thanks again for the terrific work.

— Mick W., Santa Cruz, CA

Ted it seems you are going to have all the work you can handle. This guy who made this CL inquiry wrote back that 3 other riders recommended you. It seems that there is widespread dissatisfaction with BMW cycle factory service. I just hope you can clone yourself and schedule creatively. Continued success,

— Tom, Novato, CA

I don't find too many folks that love the service dept. at the local dealer. It seems like most dealerships are fine with newer models but once you get into bikes older than 10 years it seems to be a challenge. And BTW they charge $95./hr to figure it out. That is why I went 100 miles away to get the best possible service for my 14 year old "K" bike. While I am certain that there are good shops out there for older machines, Ted just looked like the best option for me.

— T.C., Novato, CA

Hey Ted,
Thanks for the great service as always. The F650 is running great, my brother and I had a blast riding all over.

— S.B., San Jose, CA

Ted,
Just wanted to thank you for the great job you did on my bike today (2003 GS Sport). It is nice to know that there is a shop I can take my bike to and get great service, skilled & knowlegeable mechanics at a reasonable price!!! I just didn't feel comfortable anymore going to the dealers. Thanks again & will see you at my next service!

— B.M., Walnut Creek, CA

Sincere thanks for doing such a great job with the 12k service on my 04 GS Adventure. She is running so sweet - better than when she came out of the showroom to be honest! Also you offering to pick up the bike on your trailer made it so much easier for me.

I will contact you on my return from my forthcoming adventure in around 4 weeks time, when she should be ready for the next service. In the meantime I will be sure to be putting in a good word about your operation to my buddies at Norcal BMW.

Thanks again,

— B.D., Moss Beach, CA

Ted (aka repository of all knowledge beemer),

I'm still giddy over your correct analysis of my much-less-expensive-than-thought oil leak problem. I got home with approximately the same amount of oil I started with and the engine was as dry as my dad's humor. Very nice.

— M.H., Morgan Hill, CA

Thanks for everything Ted, you have been a great help and inspiration to me. It is easy to become cynical and judgmental of BMW mechanic's qualifications and skills, I have met many who have not had a clue, but you have always been straight with me, and your advice has always been correct and accurate. There are very few BMW wrenches that I trust, I prefer to do it myself, but I know I can trust you, and I will spread the word about your endeavor.

— L.R.

I want to thank you again for getting Ralph and my bikes in on such short notice. With our track day coming up, we really wanted them to run well and as you know, they were both in need of some tuning. It was nice to be able to get the bikes in and out in a timely manner and when promised. The bikes ran great at the track (or as well as the rider was capable, ha ha!)

We also really appreciate your attention to detail and your follow up service. It's really nice to be able to ride with confidence knowing the machine is running the way it should, and not worrying about failures, particularly when pushing it to the limit!

It's nice to know someone who is so knowledgeable about BMW's, considering that they are so unique.

Good luck on your new venture, we'll be telling everyone we know!

— J.G., Salinas, CA

It was a pleasure to meet you this afternoon. I was honored to meet someone that is a true craftsman in the traditional way. I so seldom see that anymore. We are plagued with " parts replacers". I could tell you were a master at your craft, straight away. I was ready to just part out this old bike, as every other place I talked to about the top end job left me quite uneasy....

— M.S., Pacific Grove, CA

Bike ran great this weekend for almost 500 miles and gas mileage is back to 220 miles per tank range. I guess the throttle bodies were really out of whack - thanks for the help.

— R.L., Los Gatos, CA

Thanks for great service and insight on my slash five! Finding a great cycle mechanic that is willing to spend the necessary time to answer all of " those" questions is never an easy endeavor, especially for a bike that is thirty plus years old. Your detailed and meticulous inspection of the slash five was second to none and I look forward to having your shop make the modifications necessary to convert my 75/5 to a 90/5? Good luck with your new location, remember a little oil on the floor is not always a bad thing.

— K.M., Albany, CA

I rode in to work this a.m. and can really feel the difference in "sweetness" i.e. throttle response, instant trustworthy idle at stops. It feels a lot more like it should, if that's not too vague a statement. Heh it's good enough to really make an intelligent decision about the KS, took the desperation away for a mere 800 bucks instead of 20 Grand. I could ride this old thing now for a couple years and even like it.

— M.S., Pacific Grove, CA
